When you start planning a kitchen project, the cabinet question comes up fast. And it usually breaks into a simple comparison: custom versus big box. But the honest answer is more layered than that — because there are really three tiers, the price difference reflects real differences in what you get, and "big box" isn't automatically wrong for every situation.
Here's a plain-English breakdown of what separates them.
Three Tiers, Not Two
Most comparisons skip over this, but there's an important middle category:
Stock cabinets are pre-built in standard sizes and sitting in a warehouse or on a showroom floor. You pick from what's available — fixed widths, fixed heights, fixed interior configuration. This is IKEA, Home Depot, and Lowe's.
Semi-custom means the cabinets are made to order, but within a manufacturer's standard size increments and finish options. More flexibility than stock, still constrained by what the line offers. Sold through many regional dealers and kitchen design studios.
Full custom means built to your exact dimensions, your configuration, and your specified materials. No standard sizes dictating the layout — the cabinets are engineered for your kitchen.
When people say "custom vs. big box," they're usually comparing the first and third. Semi-custom sits in between and is often a reasonable middle ground.
What You Actually Get With Full Custom
Dimension freedom
Most kitchens have at least one wall that doesn't break cleanly into standard cabinet widths. With stock, you fill the gap with filler strips — strips of material that bridge the space between the last cabinet and the wall. With full custom, the cabinets are sized to fit the room. No filler strips where they don't belong, no awkward gaps.
Box construction
This is where the durability difference shows up most clearly. Stock cabinet boxes are typically built from 1/2-inch particleboard or MDF with a laminate or thermofoil exterior. Full custom boxes are commonly built from 3/4-inch plywood — stronger, more dimensionally stable, and significantly more resistant to moisture over time.
This matters more in some climates than others. Nevada's dry air combined with its humidity swings — especially going into winter or during storm systems — can stress cabinet joinery over the years. Plywood holds up to that better than particleboard.
Interior configuration
With stock, you get what's in the box. With custom, you specify it — pull-out shelves where you want them, drawer-over-door or all-drawers, specific peg layouts, roll-out trays sized for your actual cookware. These things can be retrofitted into stock cabinets, but at added cost and with varying results. In a custom build, it's designed in from the start.
Finish quality
Higher-end custom shops apply catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish finishes — harder than most factory-applied stock finishes, easier to clean, and more resistant to everyday wear. The finish on a stock cabinet is functional, but it's not the same material or application process.
When Big Box Makes Sense
Stock cabinets are a real option in the right situations. If you're flipping a house and need a clean, functional kitchen on a tight timeline and budget — stock works. If you're updating a rental property and durability matters more than aesthetics or fit — stock works. If your kitchen happens to fit cleanly into standard sizing and you're working with a limited budget — stock or semi-custom makes sense.
A well-installed IKEA kitchen with good hardware and a professional countertop can look clean and hold up for years. The problems come when the layout doesn't cooperate with standard sizes, when you want specific interior features the line doesn't offer, or when you want the finish and construction to hold up over 15-plus years of daily use.
Warranty Realities
Stock cabinets from big-box stores typically carry a one-year limited warranty. After that, you're on your own — and replacement parts for discontinued door styles or finishes may simply not be available.
Full custom cabinets from a licensed shop should include a more substantive warranty on materials and construction. Equally important: you can call the craftsman who built them if something needs adjustment.
Semi-custom varies significantly by manufacturer. Some offer lifetime limited warranties; the fine print determines how useful that actually is.
The Price Question
Stock cabinets can cost a few thousand dollars in materials. Full custom typically costs significantly more — and that gap reflects real costs: site measurement, custom manufacturing, professional installation, and a longer lead time.
The more useful question isn't which is cheaper. It's what return you're getting. A well-built custom kitchen in a house you plan to stay in for ten or more years holds its value and adds real appeal at resale. Stock cabinets that don't fit the layout well, or that start showing wear after a few years, do not.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Decide
Does your kitchen break cleanly into standard cabinet widths? Measure honestly before you assume it does.
How long do you plan to stay in this house? The math changes considerably between two years and ten.
What's the box made of — plywood or particleboard? Ask this directly of any cabinet supplier, regardless of tier. Some semi-custom lines use plywood; some do not.
What interior features do you actually need? If your layout works and the standard configurations fit how you cook, semi-custom may give you most of what you want at a lower cost than full custom.
There's no universal answer — but once you've looked honestly at those questions, the right direction for your project usually becomes clear.
